From the first moment that consumers realized that not all food at the grocery store was created equally, food producers have used fancy packaging, slogans, and logos to help grab the attention of would-be buyers.
The FDA is now seeking to improve this labeling in an effort to produce a more educated consumer. While this is certainly welcome, in the end, it almost makes as much sense to have no regulation over packaging whatsoever. No matter what the FDA does to labels, food producers will find ways around it.
The only real chance we have is to foster brand awareness, perform extensive product research, join trusted review circles, and support local foods in their raw state prepared at home.
